Though we have not read all of these yet, these books have been recommended as good literature about Africa. A suggested must read is Changes by Ama Ata Aidoo (who teaches at Brown) which is about Ghana specifically. Also Half A Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, The Joys of Motherhood by Buchi Emecheta (warning, very bleak apparently) Nervous Condition by Tsitsi Dangarembga, and a few others Sister Killjoy, Mother to Mother, Woman of the Airplanes by Kojo Laing, The Beautiful Ones are Not Yet Born, (look up other authors), and the Famished Road by Ben Okri.
Of course this is not mandatory reading, but just for your information.
